Shame in meeting with disease and physical health issues – immigrants facing Norwegian Health Services
Seminar

Shame

For a number of years the ministry at St.Olav’s Hospital and Transform World Festival (www.transform.no) has arranged seminars for health workers on how immigrants experience the Norwegian Health Service. Both professionals and patients have contributed. This year the theme «Shame in meeting with disease and physical health» is central. What is perceived as shameful in different groups of immigrants and refugees? What can we as professional health workers do to make the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible? What can this mean for the individual’s ability to receive and utilize the help they get?
