“Such a Dance” by Javad Montazeri

Photo exhibition

Between 10.-17th of December every year, the Whirling Dervish Festival commemorates the death of “Molana” – the man looked on by many Muslims as a saint. “The Whirling Dervishes” believe in performing their Zekr (Praying) in the form of a dance and music ceremony called the Sema. The Sema represents a mystical journey of mans’ spiritual ascent through mind and love to “Perfect”. Turning towards the truth, the follower grows through love, deserts his ego, finds the truth and arrives at the “Perfect”. He then returns from this spiritual journey as a man who has reached maturity and a greater perfection, to love and to be of service to the whole of creation.

Photographer Javad Montazeri studied photography at Azad University in Tehran, Iran and has worked with several local and international news agencies where his photos have been published in newspapers and magazines all over the world. He has also had many exhibitions and received awards for his work.

Javad has lived in Norway since 2009. In this exhibition, he takes us to the Sema ceremony that he has visited a number of times.
